Are Hierarchical Tree Structures Silos?

There has been many posts on the forum about using silo structures & using subdomains to add silos to a website in xsp.

Today I came across "Hierarchical tree structures" in the xsp help section. They look to me like silo structures.

Can they be used as such & have the same effect as silos?

I am curious & would appreciate any comments.
