North facing backyard - pros/cons?

Hey guys,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on the my situation here.
I am about to build a new home on a north faced backyard lot in Calgary. Some friend of mine said i will barely get any sun light in the backyard.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Is North faced backyard THAT bad? say even for resale at a later time?
I am a bit concerned as the master bedroom/great room/en suite are all located on the north side of the house ... so is it going to be fairly depressing atmosphere?
