If I buy for example Google stock at $500 how many shares will this get me?

Is this a one off payment and I either lose my money or make a profit on it?

Are these the basics of stock investment or is there something else I should know?

Also, do I need a broker if I want to buy and sell stock online? Where will my earnings go? to my paypal account if i make a profit? Where is the best place to buy and sell stock online?

If you have experience in this subject I would greatly appreciate your help.
